There are several requirements (but you also have to meet certain conditions for the car or truck you wish to buy). Your dealer can help you determine whether you have an eligible trade in vehicle.
Your trade-in vehicle must
- have been manufactured less than 25 years before the date you trade it in
- have a “new” combined city/highway fuel economy of 18 miles per gallon or less
- be in drivable condition
- be continuously insured and registered to the same owner for the full year preceding the trade-in
Note that work trucks (i.e., very large pickup trucks and cargo vans) have different requirements.

Does Your Trade-In Qualify?
The #1 question from consumers is: When will the bill be passed? The second most frequently asked question is: Will my trade and the car I want to buy qualify for the $4,500 cash voucher?
Examples of Proposed Legislation
If a consumer currently driving a 1995 Dodge Dakota with 100,000 miles and if it was in good condition, the car may be valued at $1,500. If the consumer decided to purchase a 2009 Hyundai Sonata, they could qualify for a $3,500 – $4,500 rebate.
The Hyundai Sonata has an estimated 29 MP by the EPA. Car dealers across the USA are selling for the 2009 Sonata for as little as $15,376. If a consumer want to purchase a new Sonata, and qualified for the $4,500 credit, if qualified, would bring the car down to $10,876. This is a significant incentive based on this price example.
A a major compromise in the proposed Bill offers no special incentives to buy American-made or American-owned brand vehicles. The auto industry hopes the proposed program will have the same effect as similar programs in Europe.
